  • Q: Why do I need to eat 1,200 calories a day when I’m on a diet? Can I skip dinner?"
A: Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimal rate of energy expenditure that a person needs to keep the body functioning at rest (e.g., breathing, blood circulation, etc.). The average BMR for women is around 1,200 calories, which means that your body would still require 1,200 calories to keep its basic functions operating even if you lay in bed all day without moving.Basal metabolism accounts for 65-70% of the body’s total energy expenditure, and hence it determines how fast you can lose weight. For example, if you try to lose weight by skipping dinner, it will lead to a decrease in BMR. As a result, your weight-loss progress will slow down and may regain weight once you start to eat dinner again.
  • Q: Is skipping breakfast bad for weight loss?
A: Yes. If you eat more for breakfast, you will feel less hungry at night and hence reduce the chances of unhealthy snacking. You should eat a reasonable amount of carbohydrates and proteins at breakfast and establish a healthy breakfast habit. Foods like eggs, milk, bread, vegetable and fruits are ideal breakfast choices. You can even eat as much as 500 calories for breakfast.
